Green Day to get back on road in March

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The members of Green Day said on Monday they will return to the road in March after the punk rock band canceled its fall club tour and postponed later dates as frontman Billie Joe Armstrong underwent treatment for substance abuse.

"We want to thank everyone for hanging in with us for the last few months," the band members said in a statement on their website. "We are very excited to hit the road and see all of you again, though we regret having to cancel more shows."

Armstrong, lead singer and guitarist for the Grammy-winning rock band, sought substance abuse treatment in September following an angry, guitar-smashing on-stage outburst in Las Vegas. The details of his addiction were never specified.

Armstrong, 40, added to the website posting with a note on Instagram, saying:

"Dear friends ... I just want to thank you all for the love and support you've shown for the past few months. Believe me, it hasn't gone unnoticed and I'm eternally grateful to have such an amazing set of friends and family.

"I'm getting better every day," he said. "So now, without further ado, the show must go on. We can't wait to get on the road and live out loud! Our passion has only grown stronger."

The tour will begin in Chicago on March 28, with dates in Pittsburgh, New York, Toronto and other cities up through April 12 in Quebec City.

The band said it would announce additional West Coast dates in early 2013.

Tickets for the postponed shows will be honored at the new dates, Green Day said. Tickets for canceled shows will be refunded at the point of purchase.

In November the band moved up the release date of "iTr?!," part of an ambitious trilogy of albums that marks their first collection of new music since 2009, to December 11 from its original date of January 15, in part to make up for the canceled and postponed dates.

The California-based punk rock band, formed in the late 1980s, has sold more than 65 million records worldwide and won five Grammys, including best alternative album for its 1994 major-label debut, "Dookie," and best rock album for "American Idiot" and "21st Century Breakdown."

Box Office Guru Wrapup: Hobbit Threepeats, Western & Musical Rock

For a third consecutive frame, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey led the North American box office but this time was joined by a trio of new releases opening on Christmas Day which filled up the next spots on the charts over a red hot final weekend of 2012.

Smashing through the $200M barrier, The Hobbit collected an estimated $32.9M in its third journey pushing the 17-day cume up to a sizable $222.7M. Warner Bros. enjoyed a slim 11% decline and fared very well during this past Christmas week. Finishing with $290M seems very likely while reaching the $300M mark remains a possibility as well. Hobbit should surpass $700M globally before the start of 2013.

Quentin Tarantino enjoyed the biggest debut of his career with his latest film Django Unchained which took in an estimated $30.7M over the weekend and a superb $64M in the six days since its Christmas Day launch on Tuesday. That's already bigger than his old career best opening week (first seven days) of $53.7M for his last film Inglourious Basterds which debuted on a summer Friday in 2009.

The slave Western starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Samuel L. Jackson, and Leonardo DiCaprio averaged a strong $10,195 from 3,010 locations making for the best average of any wide release. That is especially impressive for an R-rated film that runs nearly three hours long. Controversy related to Django's language and violence resulted in extra press coverage and more buzz and multiplexes enjoyed the benefits.

The Weinstein Co. is positioning the revenge film as both an awards contender and a commercial blockbuster and so far is succeeding on both fronts. Reviews have been very positive and the CinemaScore grade was an encouraging A-. Django Unchained already seems on track to beat the $120.5M of Basterds to become Tarantino's highest grossing film ever.

Finishing close behind in third place was the acclaimed musical Les Miserables with an estimated $28M over the Friday-to-Sunday period and a sturdy $67.4M since its Christmas launch. The Universal release averaged a terrific $9,960 from only 2,814 locations and is aiming for a long run ahead thanks to excellent word-of-mouth and upcoming awards activity including Oscar nominations and Golden Globe wins which are expected.

The Hugh Jackman-led film started off with the second best Christmas Day opening in history with $18.2M on Tuesday trailing only the $24.6M Friday of Sherlock Holmes in 2009. Compared to Django, Les Miserables has seen more erosion over the six-day launch period. But since it is based on a world-famous musical, the run was expected to have a big upfront showing of die-hard fans. Studio exit polls showed that the audience was 67% female with the overall CinemaScore being a glowing A grade.

Produced for $61M, the PG-13 film enjoyed international success too with $38.3M this weekend from only eight markets, mostly in the Pacific Rim, for a $48.7M cume and $116.2M worldwide total so far with plenty more to come. Korea accounts for nearly half of the overseas tally with a sensational $20.1M beating the opening of The Hobbit.

Opening in fourth place was the Billy Crystal-Bette Midler family comedy Parental Guidance with $14.8M and $29.6M since its Christmas Day bow. The PG-rated pic about grandparents having to care for their modern grandkids averaged a moderate $4,396 over the weekend period. With few clean options this holiday season that the whole family can enjoy together, Guidance connected with its target audience and will now try to keep it going through January when direct competition will still be light. Fox's $25M production played to a crowd that was 52% female and 55% over 25. Reviews were lousy.

Tom Cruise dropped down to fifth place with his latest action entry Jack Reacher which dipped a reasonable 10% to an estimated $14M pushing the ten-day total up to $44.7M for Paramount. Judd Apatow's new comedy This is 40 climbed up 14% from last weekend and grossed an estimated $13.2M for a ten-day take of $37.1M. The Paul Rudd-Leslie Mann pic picked up steam after Christmas once its target audience became more available, however the Universal title still sits far behind the $65.9M that Knocked Up grossed in its first ten days in 2007.

Moviegoers with extra time on their hands caught up with one of the hottest Oscar hopefuls out there, Steven Spielberg's Lincoln. The Daniel Day-Lewis starrer surged 36% from last weekend - the best jump in the top ten - and took in an estimated $7.5M bumping the cume up to a sturdy $132M for Disney. The Republican president has been cleaning up at the box office and has plenty of firepower left especially with the expected boatload of Oscar nominations coming in less than two weeks. Lincoln is now the top-grossing drama of 2012. Another older-skewing film that saw sales climb from last weekend was the Barbra Streisand comedy The Guilt Trip which banked an estimated $6.7M, up 24% from its disappointing debut. The Paramount title has collected only $21.1M in 12 days.

Animated films rounded out the top ten. Disney's 3D re-release of Monsters, Inc. shot up 33% and grossed an estimated $6.4M for $18.5M after 12 days. The Pixar hit's lifetime total now stands at $274.4M. Rival DreamWorks Animation suffered a 17% decline for its holiday adventure Rise of the Guardians which did an estimated $4.9M upping the cume to $90.2M. Studios missed out on a major opportunity by not releasing any major new toons this Christmas.

The James Bond cash cow Skyfall fell from the top ten in its eighth round, however it reached a key milestone by breaking the $1 billion barrier in worldwide box office. Sony's spy actioner captured an estimated $4.6M domestically, off a scant 2%, raising its sum to an incredible $289.6M. Overseas, Daniel Craig and company took in $10.3M boosting the hefty international tally to $710.6M and the worldwide haul to a cool $1B. In the U.K, Skyfall has become the top-grossing film of all-time and the first blockbuster ever to cross the ?100M mark.

The Weinstein Co. went fully nationwide with its awards contender Silver Linings Playbook widening the seven-week old comedy from 371 to 745 locations and made an estimated $4.1M for a $5,517 average - commendable for a film this old. The average was higher than last weekend's despite the expansion which indicates that audiences are still interested in the Bradley Cooper-Jennifer Lawrence pic regardless of the flood of other Oscar hopefuls out there. Cume to date is $27.4M.

The acclaimed Osama bin Laden manhunt pic Zero Dark Thirty suffered a 23% drop from its red hot debut last weekend which was unusual for a holiday frame when moviegoers are more available. Still, Sony's Kathryn Bigelow-directed thriller averaged a sensational $63,000 from only five theaters in New York and Los Angeles. Zero expands to more cities on Friday including San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston and goes nationwide on January 11, one day after Oscar nominations are announced.

Lacking awards buzz, Matt Damon's new film Promised Land attracted a mild debut in limited release grossing an estimated $190,150 from 25 locations for a $7,606 average. Focus plans to expand nationwide on Friday into an aggressive 1,500 theaters which will be challenging given the opening weekend performance and the fact that rival arthouse pic The Impossible - which has earned better reviews and stronger box office - also goes wide on the same day. Reviews have been mixed for Promised Land.

The top ten films grossed an estimated $159.1M which was up 18% from last year when Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol was number one with $29.4M; and up 16% from 2010 when Little Fockers remained in the top spot with $25.8M.

Doctors: Blood clot located in Clinton's head

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton developed a blood clot in her head but did not suffer a stroke or neurological damage, her doctors said Monday. They say they are confident that she will make a full recovery.

In a statement that revealed the location of the clot, Clinton's doctors said it is in the vein in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. She is being treated with blood thinners to help dissolve the clot, the doctors said, and she will be released once the medication dose has been established.

Clinton, 65, is making excellent progress and is in good spirits, Dr. Lisa Bardack of the Mt. Kisco Medical Group and Dr. Gigi El-Bayoumi of George Washington University said in a statement.

Clinton, who was spending a second day at a New York hospital, developed the clot after suffering a concussion earlier in December. She had fainted, fallen and struck her head at home while battling a stomach virus, her spokesman said. She has not been seen publicly since Dec. 7.

Phillipe Reines, her spokesman, said her doctors discovered the clot Sunday while performing a follow-up exam on the concussion. She was admitted to New York-Presbyterian Hospital.

Clinton's complication "certainly isn't the most common thing to happen after a concussion" and is one of the few types of blood clots in the skull or head that are treated with blood thinners, said Dr. Larry Goldstein, a neurologist who is director of Duke University's stroke center.

The area where Clinton's clot developed is "a drainage channel, the equivalent of a big vein inside the skull ? it's how the blood gets back to the heart," Goldstein said.

Blood thinners usually are enough to treat the clot and it should have no long-term consequences if her doctors are saying she has suffered no neurological damage from it, Goldstein said.

Clinton had planned to step down as secretary of state at the beginning of President Barack Obama's second term. Whether she will return to work before she resigns remained a question.

Democrats are privately if not publicly speculating: How might her illness affect a decision about running for president in 2016?

After decades in politics, Clinton says she plans to spend the next year resting. She has long insisted she had no intention of mounting a second campaign for the White House four years from now. But the door is not entirely closed, and she would almost certainly emerge as the Democrat to beat if she decided to give in to calls by Democratic fans and run again.

Her age ? and thereby health ? would likely be a factor under consideration, given that Clinton would be 69 when sworn in, if she were elected in 2016. That might become even more of an issue in the early jockeying for 2016 if what started as a bad stomach bug becomes a prolonged, public bout with more serious infirmity.

Not that Democrats are willing to talk openly about the political implications of a long illness, choosing to keep any discussions about her condition behind closed doors. Publicly, Democrats reject the notion that a blood clot could hinder her political prospects.

"Some of those concerns could be borderline sexist," said Basil Smikle, a Democratic strategist who worked for Clinton when she was a senator. "Dick Cheney had significant heart problems when he was vice president, and people joked about it. He took the time he needed to get better, and it wasn't a problem."

It isn't uncommon for presidential candidates' health ? and age ? to be an issue. Both in 2000 and 2008, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., had to rebut concerns he was too old to be commander in chief or that his skin cancer could resurface.

Two decades after Clinton became the first lady, signs of her popularity ? and her political strength ? are ubiquitous.

Obama had barely declared victory in November when Democrats started zealously plugging Clinton as their strongest White House contender four years from now, should she choose to take that leap.

"Wouldn't that be exciting," House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi declared in December. "I hope she goes ? why wouldn't she?"

Even Republicans concede that were she to run, Clinton would be a force to be reckoned with.

"Trying to win that will be truly the Super Bowl," former House Speaker and 2012 GOP presidential candidate Newt Gingrich said in December. "The Republican Party today is incapable of competing at that level."

Americans admire Clinton more than any other woman in the world, according to a Gallup poll released Monday ? the 17th time in 20 years that Clinton has claimed that title. And a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll found that 57 percent of Americans would support Clinton as a candidate for president in 2016, with just 37 percent opposed. Meanwhile, websites have already cropped up hawking "Clinton 2016" mugs and tote bags.

Clinton returned to the U.S. from a trip to Europe, then fell ill with a stomach virus in early December that left her severely dehydrated and forced her to cancel a trip to North Africa and the Middle East. Until then, she had cancelled only two scheduled overseas trips, one to Europe after breaking her elbow in June 2009 and one to Asia after the February 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

Her condition worsened when she fainted, fell and suffered a concussion while at home alone in mid-December as she recovered from the virus. It was announced on Dec. 13.

This isn't the first time Clinton has suffered a blood clot. In 1998, midway through her husband's second term as president, Clinton was in New York fundraising for the midterm elections when a swollen right foot led her doctor to diagnose a clot in her knee requiring immediate treatment.

Beyond talk of future politics, Clinton's three-week absence from the State Department has raised eyebrows among some conservative commentators who questioned the seriousness of Clinton's ailment after she cancelled planned Dec. 20 testimony before Congress on the deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.

Clinton had been due to discuss with lawmakers a scathing report on the attack she had commissioned that found serious failures of leadership and management in two State Department bureaus were to blame for insufficient security at the facility. Clinton took responsibility for the incident before the report was released, but she was not blamed. Four officials cited in the report have either resigned or been reassigned.

Utah teen with dual prosthetic legs to represent Shriners in Rose Parade

Hunter Woodhall, 13, was born with a lower limb deficiency that required surgery to remove both his feet. He was fitted with artificial legs at Shriners Hospital for Children in Tampa Bay, Fla. He will be riding on a float in the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day in Pasadena, Calif.

Jay Dortzbach, Deseret News

SALT LAKE CITY ? Hunter Woodhall plays basketball, football and soccer. He wrestles, runs track and field, snow skis, swims and roller blades. And he does it all with two prosthetic legs.

As an international patient ambassador for the Shriners Hospitals for Children, the 13-year-old Utah boy will be one of four people representing the children's health care system, which operates 22 hospitals in the United States, Canada and Mexico.

"A lot of people don't know what the hospitals do," Hunter said. "They help children just like me, and it's my job to help raise awareness and to show everyone else what they do for kids. I don't know what my life might've been like without Shriners."

He'll be riding on a float in the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day in Pasadena, Calif., and gets to enjoy the Rose Bowl game featuring Stanford and Wisconsin universities afterward.

Hunter was born with fibular hemimelia, a rare condition that causes a shortening or absence of one of the two bones in the calf. One of his legs lacked a calf bone and the ankle joint of the other leg was fused.

Aside from other, less desirable options, Hunter required surgery to remove both his feet, below the knee. At about 11 months old, he was fitted with artificial legs at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Tampa, Fla.

Without the surgery, he'd likely be in a wheelchair for life.

"I don't know what it would be like to not be able to do the things I love," Hunter said, adding that he lives for sports. His parents and two older brothers, also sports enthusiasts, have helped to instill in him a desire to participate in competitive sporting events, but also never let his disability get him down.

"It hasn't ever slowed him down, he's always been a goer," said Hunter's mother, Barb Woodhall. "I think some of it is God-given. Kids like that are often given a little something to get through their situations.

"We have never treated him differently than our other two boys, so he has kept up with them," she said. "There were certain times it took him longer or required more effort, but he always did it."

The family later moved to Utah, where Hunter grew to become an accomplished athlete, and the Shriners hospital in Salt Lake City has fitted him with a basic pair of prosthetic legs and a set of "C-legs, or Cheetah legs," as he calls them, that allows him more flexibility in sports. A third, waterproof set can be used during wrestling or swimming, which Hunter also enjoys.

"I'll get up, put my legs on and get ready to go to school," he said in a YouTube video made after he became an ambassador in July. "It's just like normal. I don't think much of it because I don't know what it's like to not get up and not put your legs on."

In 2011, the local Shriners hospital fitted patients with 250 prosthetics and more than 4,300 orthotic braces, according to hospital public relations director Mike Babcock. This year, the hospital is averaging about 75 patient visits each month for prosthetic fittings and repairs, helping toddlers take their first steps and making it possible for kids like Hunter to excel at what he loves.

"He is an excellent representative of Shriners Hospitals for Children," Babcock said. "His can-do attitude and fine character inspires caregivers and patients alike."

Through the years, Hunter, who lives in Syracuse, has been astonishing his doctors and therapists with his various feats and accomplishments. While he said he doesn't yet know why he was born without legs, Hunter wants to give others hope and inspiration to get through their hardships, whatever they may be.

"When you just give up, you're like, done," he said. "And all those people you have inspired or will inspire, it's not going to happen anymore."

Small business chat update ? Liz Broomfield ? LibroEditing ...

mugs Welcome to another Small Business Chat update ? with me! My original interview was published on Christmas Eve and when I asked myself where I planned to be in a year?s time, I answered, ?Well, I?ll have been full-time with Libro for a year. Hopefully I?ll be earning enough to support myself, I?ll have taken a holiday or two, and have a good solid roster of regular clients to keep me going?. Let?s see how I?m doing ?

Are you where you thought you?d be when you looked forward a year ago?

Yes! I have been full-time for a year, I?m earning more than enough to support myself ? it?s so nice to be able to have lunch out when I want to, or treat myself to some nice pampery toiletries in the sales, and to be able to buy my friends nice birthday and Christmas presents. I have had one holiday and some time off, I?ve got better at scheduling in time off, and I do indeed have a solid roster of regular clients to keep me going ? I?ve added one or two per month this year.

What has changed and what has stayed the same?

The main thing is having only one job ? much easier. I have been able to spend more time with my friends and with Matthew. I have stopped working with Master?s students through their course, as I discovered this was quite draining and gave rise to lots of urgent panicky work for people?s deadlines (I?ve been able to recommend such prospects over to a friend who?s great at working with such customers and is specialising in academic work). I?ve published one e-book and I?m about to publish another, so I should have some sort of passive income going on soon. What?s stayed the same? I?m enjoying my work still (hooray!) and enjoying working with clients around the world. And apart from a brief flurry around the beginning of the year and then September, when I presented my paper at the Iris Murdoch conference, I haven?t finished writing up my research project, although I have finished the questionnaire gathering side of it.

What have you learned? What do you wish you?d known a year ago?

I?ve learned to be better at stopping work to have the evening off, to not panic when the work goes quiet, and how to work on my own, I suppose. I wish I?d formulated some of my tips for homeworkers sooner so I could make sure I was looking after myself. I also wish I?d found some back-up people earlier, so I can be ill or busy without worry.

Any more hints and tips for people?

If you?re thinking about jumping ship from your full- or part-time day job, and you?ve got the money saved up to support yourself for a few months ? go for it!

And ? where do you see yourself and your business in a(nother) year?s time?

I?ve got some personal plans bubbling away, and I?d like to be training for a marathon in the next year or two. Business-wise, I would like it to be pretty well as it is now ? a good roster of interesting regular clients keeping me busy and keeping my income steady.

If you?ve enjoyed this interview, please see more freelancer chat, the index to all the interviewees, and information on how you can have your business featured.

Temporarily Bring a Broken Blender Back to Life with an Electric DrillIf your blender dies during a party you can get back to making margaritas in five minutes by opening up the blender, cutting off the drive mechanism from the blender drive shaft, and inserting the drive shaft into your drill's chuck.

Reddit user mrpalmer16 was able to continue the party using this emergency repair. It's definitely not how you'd want to use your blender every day, but works great until you get a chance to replace it.

Olympic steeplechase in London awaits CU Buff teammates Emma Coburn and Shalaya Kipp

CU's Emma Coburn will take her passion to the Olympic level when she runs the steeplechase at the London Games. (Helen H. Richardson, The Denver Post)

BOULDER???

Emma Coburn went to her first Colorado football game when she was a week old. She could sing the CU fight song when she was 4, and she wore a little Buffs cheerleader outfit to her older brother's flag football games when she was 5. Her parents attended CU, as did grandparents, aunts, uncles and older siblings.

"I mean," Coburn said, "I was born to be a Buffalo."

Apparently she was born be a special runner for CU's successful track and cross country program as well. Next month she will represent her school and her country on the track at the London Olympics, two months shy of her 22nd birthday. And then, unless she changes her mind about turning professional ? she won the Olympic

Steeple Chase stars Shalaya Kipp at Potts Field in Boulder. (Helen H. Richardson, The Denver Post)

trials' steeplechase running world-class times ? she will return to CU for her final year of eligibility.

A Boulder native who grew up in Crested Butte, Coburn has had trouble grasping the notion that she and teammate Shalaya Kipp will be running in the Olympics together in the same event. Kipp, who is from Salt Lake City, finished third at the trials.

"I know we're flying there soon, but I just still feel kind of in a daze," Coburn said after a workout Thursday, six days after she made the team. "Part of me feels like, 'OK, now what?' And part of me is kind of not back to reality yet."

Kipp said the reality of their impending trip to the biggest athletic stage in the world hasn't sunk in for her, either.

"Maybe it will, by the time we're done with it, by the end of the summer," Kipp said. "Right now, mainly just focusing on my training, not trying to get too overwhelmed, going, 'Oh, my gosh, I'm training for the Olympics!' This is what I do every day. Don't want it messing with my head."

Coburn won the NCAA steeplechase title last year but redshirted the indoor and outdoor track seasons this year to focus on making the Olympic team and peaking in London. Kipp won the NCAA title last month, the fifth steeplechase title for a CU woman in seven years.

Steeplechase is one of the most demanding events in track and field, requiring speed, aerobic capacity, strength, balance, coordination and a lot of courage. Runners go over 35 barriers in a 3,000-meter run, including a "water jump." Those barriers are 30 inches high and can be dangerous, especially in traffic.

"It requires everything," CU coach Mark Wetmore said. "It's almost a middle distance event, so the more economical you are over the barriers, the more of a middle distance event it becomes. But I would say here, our method of preparation more emphasizes the 2,970 meters that are between the hurdles than the total of 30 meters of jumping up and down. A lot of steeple coaches spend a lot of time on drills and drills and drills. We do less."

Coburn appears to float over the hurdles, seemingly stepping over them effortlessly rather than leaping. Kipp has to put more effort into getting over them.

"Shalaya has more engine and less aerodynamics," Wetmore said. "I think in terms of Formula One racing ? her aerodynamics aren't perfect, but she's got a 1,000-horsepower engine."

Trading ski poles for steeples

Coburn may have been born to run for CU, but Kipp grew up splitting time between Salt Lake City and the ski town of Park City, dreaming of competing in the Olympics as a ski racer. She was 11 when Park City hosted slalom and giant slalom for the 2002 Olympics.

"As a little kid, I drew the Olympic rings with snowflakes around it," Kipp said. "My Olympic dreams happened in the winter, not in the summer. (Running) kind of ended up being a surprise, but I'm not going to complain either way. Training is training. You learn to work hard from ski racing, and you can apply that to running."

In fact, CU first got Kipp's attention because of its ski team, winners of 18 NCAA championships.

"I remember I was looking at colleges with my mom as a sophomore in high school, I was still ski racing and I actually looked at the ski team here," Kipp said. "I kind of kept Boulder in the back of my mind. I really liked it. As time went on in high school, I started thinking about Colorado as a running school."

In fact it was Kipp's background as a ski racer that made Wetmore think she just might have potential in steeplechase.

"She had been a downhill skier and wasn't afraid of going 50 miles an hour over slippery, scary things," Wetmore said. "We thought, 'Well, jumping off of stuff in crowds when you're tired has some fear involved, she seems to have the courage necessary for (steeplechase).' While the technique of it hasn't come as easily for her as it has for Emma, the crowd and the jumping and stuff was never a problem for her, which is huge."

Kipp saw her ski background as an asset as well.

"When he explained the water to me, I thought, 'Well, if I'm fine going on wooden boards 60 miles per hour, landing on ice, I can go running-speed and land in some water,'" Kipp said. "Turned out it was a lot of fun. I found some similarities, and I really enjoyed it."

Coburn's family moved from Boulder to Crested Butte when she was in the third grade. She and her three siblings attented a small K-12 public school called the Crested Butte Community School. Before focusing on running, Coburn played volleyball and basketball.

"We had a little deal with all the kids that, if they kept high grades and did three sports a year, there were perks involved in that," said her father, Bill Coburn. "The third sport of the year, besides volleyball and basketball, is track. They all did track. She just kind of followed along."

In basketball and volleyball, Coburn developed athletic skills that would serve her well in the steeple.

"She was super coordinated and super athletic," Bill Coburn said. "She averaged 16 rebounds a game and had the most spikes. Just being able to coordinate your body and know where your body is in space, being able to jump, you put that kind of quality with distance running and it's a great event for her, the steeplechase."

Fueling each other's fire

Despite competing against each other in the same event, Coburn and Kipp are good friends. Their affection and respect for each other is obvious.

"Emma and I work together really well because we kind of have a yin-yang aspect to our relationship," Kipp said. "We both have our strengths, and we both can respect the other one's strengths. We'll go on 15-mile long runs together, and some days she'll be pulling me up all those hills, some days I'll have to pull her up those hills."

Coburn is the better steepler, at least for now, but Kipp typically beats Coburn in cross country running.

"I think we just know that we'd rather be working hard together than have a little more glory on our own," Coburn said. "In workouts we're neck-and-neck for everything and we're not competing against each other, we're just deciding to run together and we both love it. I'd just rather have her by my side than a stranger by my side in London."

Coburn could make good money now as a professional, but American record holder Jenny Simpson finished her CU career after racing steeplechase in the Olympics, and Coburn wants to do the same.

"It's a discussion I have had several times," Coburn said of turning pro, "but I'm very happy being at the University of Colorado. My coaches and I made the decision to sacrifice my indoor and outdoor seasons and redshirt so I could focus on (London), so I feel like I owe it to my school, my coaches, my Colorado community and my teammate Shalaya to finish out my eligibility there and represent the school again on the track in 2013. I'd like to stay at Colorado."

What is steeplechase?

At the elite level, steeplechase is a 3,000-meter run with four ordinary barriers on the track and a fifth barrier with a "water jump," so the race requires runners to clear barriers 35 times in a race. For women, the barriers are set at 30 inches. For men, they are set at 36 inches.

Steeplechase has been an Olympic event for men since the inception of the modern Olympics in 1896. The first women's Olympic steeplechase was held at Beijing in 2008, where Jenny (Barringer) Simpson finished ninth while still a student at CU and was the top American. She also is the American-record holder (9 minutes, 12.5 seconds) but no longer runs the steeplechase. She made the London Olympic team in the 1,500 meters.John Meyer, The Denver Post

Refinance options for 100% LTV? - Zillow Mortgage Advice

Hi All,

I just recently got denied for a refinance because the appraisal came in considerably lower ($243,000) than what I had expected which put our LTV at 100%.

Do I have any available refinance options available at the moment? Should I begin pay down the principal more rapidly? Is there a specific LTV number that would qualify me for refinance?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

US consumers lose confidence as fiscal cliff nears

(AP) ? U.S. consumers peering over the "fiscal cliff" don't like what they see.

Fears of sharp tax increases and government spending cuts set to take effect next week sent consumer confidence tumbling in December to its lowest level since August.

The Conference Board said Thursday that its consumer confidence index fell for the second straight month in December to 65.1, down from 71.5 in November.

The survey showed consumers' outlook for the next six months deteriorated to its lowest level since 2011 ? a signal to Lynn Franco, the board's director of economic indicators, that consumers are worried about the tax hikes and spending cuts that take effect Jan. 1 if the White House and Congress can't reach a budget deal.

Earlier this week a report showed consumers held back shopping this holiday season, another indication of their concerns about possible tax increases.

The December drop in confidence "is obvious confirmation that a sudden and serious deterioration in hopes for the future took place in December ? presumably reflecting concern about imminent 'fiscal cliff' tax increases," said Pierre Ellis, an economist with Decision Economics.

The decline in confidence comes at a critical time when the economy is showing signs of improvement elsewhere.

A recovery in housing market is looking more sustainable. On Thursday, the government said new-home sales increased in November at the fastest seasonally adjusted annual pace in 2? years.

And the job market has made slow but steady gains in recent months. The average number of Americans applying for unemployment benefits over the past month fell to the lowest level since March 2008.

But the political wrangling in Washington threatens the economy's slow, steady progress. President Barack Obama and House returned to Washington Thursday to resume talks with just days to go before the deadline.

Mixed signals over those negotiations led to a rocky day on Wall Street.

Stocks plunged early after the weak consumer confidence report and a warning from Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid that the government appeared to be headed over the "fiscal cliff." At one point, the Dow Jones industrial average fell as much as 150 points.

But the market came back in the final hour of trading on a potential sign of movement in the talks: Republican leaders announced they would bring the House back into session on Sunday evening. The Dow recouped nearly all of its losses to close down just 18 points at 13,096.

A short fall over the cliff won't push the economy into recession. But most economists expect some tax increases to take effect next year. That could slow economic growth.

While consumers are more worried about where the economy is headed, they were upbeat about present conditions, according to the latest survey. Their assessment of current economic conditions rose this month to the highest level since August 2008.

A key reason for that is gas prices hit a 2012 low of $3.21 a gallon last week. Normally, that would prompt consumers to spend more on holiday shopping.

But the opposite has happened. A report from MasterCard Advisors Spending pulse indicated sales grew in the two months before Christmas at the weakest rate since 2008, when the country was in a deep recession.

There were other distractions this holiday season. In late October, Superstorm Sandy battered the Northeast and mid-Atlantic states, which account for 24 percent of U.S. retail sales. That coupled with the presidential election, hurt sales during the first half of November.

Shopping picked up in the second half of November. But "fiscal cliff" worries dampened sales in December.

The National Retail Federation, the nation's largest retail trade group, remains optimistic that sales won't be quite as bad as earlier reports have suggested. It is sticking to its forecast for total sales for November and December to be up 4.1 percent to $586.1 billion this year. That's more than a percentage point lower than the growth in each of the past two years, and the smallest increase since 2009 when sales were up just 0.3 percent.

Christian politician quits Egypt upper house as tensions persist

CAIRO (Reuters) - A Christian member of Egypt's upper house of parliament quit on Thursday, reflecting persistent political tensions just a day after the Islamist-dominated chamber took over legislative authority under a contentious new constitution.

The Islamist-backed charter, approved in a referendum this month, is meant to be the cornerstone of a democratic and economically stable Egypt. But the opposition says it is too Islamist and does nothing to protect minorities.

The resignation of Nadia Henry, who represents the Anglican Church in the upper house, also highlights worries by Egypt's Christians, who make up about a tenth of its 83 million population, about political gains made by Islamists since Hosni Mubarak was ousted in a 2011 revolution.

Under pressure to show tolerance towards all groups, President Mohamed Mursi appointed 90 members including Christians, Liberals and women to the upper house - with Islamists from the Muslim Brotherhood and ultra-conservative Salafis - last week.

But in a resignation letter published by the state-owned al-Ahram newspaper, Henry said liberal and other minority groups were not represented properly in the chamber.

"I agreed to the membership of the Shura Council (upper house) in the context of consensus that stressed all civil forces will get appointed," Henry wrote.

"Since that did not happen, I hope you accept my apology for not accepting the appointment," she said.

She did not attend the upper house session on Wednesday, the first with the appointed members.

The opposition fears that the Shura Council upper house, which will hold legislative authority until a new parliament is elected in early 2013, will issue laws curbing freedoms.

Mursi signed the new constitution into law this week after two thirds of Egyptian voters approved it in a two-stage referendum this month which the opposition said was marred by widespread violations.

Propelled to power by his Muslim Brotherhood allies this year, Mursi says the constitution and a subsequent vote to elect a permanent lower house will help stop political unrest and allow him to focus on burning economic issues.

Henry was one of the 90 members handpicked by Mursi into the 270-seat council. She was not immediately available for comment.

Any further resignations would threaten the legitimacy of the Shura Council at a time when it is expected to move fast with difficult reforms key to helping Egypt's battered economy.

Two-thirds of the upper house were elected in a vote this year, with one third appointed by the president, some of whom are members of the Muslim Brotherhood's Freedom and Justice Party and other ultra-conservative Salafis.

Mursi and his Islamist allies have urged the opposition to engage in national unity talks to achieve much needed consensus to help end an economic crisis that has widened the budget deficit and sent the Egyptian pound to a eight-year low.

"We stress again that the nation should achieve internal reconciliation and forget its differences," the Muslim Brotherhood's supreme guide, Mohamed Badei, told Egyptians in his weekly message.

"Let's work seriously to end the reciprocal wars of attrition. We are in an urgent need to unify ranks and group together and focus our capabilities and assets to the general benefit."

The constitution has come under attack from Mursi's opponents after Christians and liberals quit an assembly tasked with drafting the constitution earlier, saying the document gave no guarantees of a civil state and threatened freedoms.

Mongolia: Property ? bubble or boom?

In September, Export Development Canada, the state-owned export credit agency, warned that due to bank credits rising in excess of 50% year-on-year in 2012, a real estate ?bubble? had appeared in the capital, which is likely to have a negative impact on the banking sector. Meanwhile, in October the central bank said the national growth rate in 2012 will slow by up to one-third from the record 17% achieved in 2011, due to a decrease in foreign direct investment (FDI) and reduced demand from China.

Talk of slowing growth and a property bubble clashes with the estimations of real estate agencies, which are predicting that, as copper and coking coal mines come online, the real estate market will see ?exponential? growth.

?We expect [our] diversified portfolio of high-quality retail, office and redevelopment property in downtown Ulaanbaatar to compound at 30-50% per year going forward, undergirded by a combination of rapidly rising rental yields and compressing capitalisation rates,? wrote Mongolia Growth Group, a real estate and financial services conglomerate, in an October press statement.

However, the rapid growth scenario for a country of just 3m people, which issued its first mortgage only in 2003, poses a number of issues for investors, including the crumbling state of much of the country?s infrastructure.

Citing further problems, in August the Mongolia Real Estate Blog wrote, ?The volatility of housing prices and the potential for a boom-bust is higher if the housing supply is severely constrained by land access and urban regulation problems, which is an issue, considering the short supply of land in Ulaanbaatar?.

A number of players in the industry, who are concerned about the prospects of a real estate bubble in the capital, have pointed to similar circumstances in Kazakhstan in 2008. ?Driven by an influx of oil-related FDI and easily accessible mortgages, land prices in downtown Almaty, Kazakhstan?s largest city, surged a whopping 8000% between 2002 and 2008, while the cost per metre of apartments in the downtown area rose 833% in the same period?, noted local news website Mongoliana in July. With the onset of the global financial crisis, the property bubble burst and prices dropped 40% from their peak, and currently are half of what they were in 2007.

However, industry insiders say there is inherently less risk in the Mongolian market. ?Despite rising prices, the market in Mongolia remains majority cash-based, so borrowing is not yet a significant risk factor,? said Christopher de Gruben, the CEO of M.A.D. Investment Solutions, a Property Investment firm based in Ulaanbaatar, in January.

Another important factor to the country?s growth is its emerging middle class. Per-capita GDP in Mongolia more than tripled to $2200 in 2010 from $638 in 2004, and is set to rise further this year, as the government increases all government salaries and pensions by 43%. There are now around 4,000 apartments in Ulaanbaatar available to nationals with middle incomes, who will be able to easily access mortgages, according to Frontier Securities, a local investment firm.

According to Mongoliana, the key to avoiding the bubble is enabling growth by lowering lending standards and ?encouraging new homeownership, while also managing risk across the mining and financial sectors in the long term?.

In terms of encouraging home ownership among citizens, the government is taking a number of steps, with T. Bayarsaikhan, the minister of construction and urban development, stating in October that a 6% interest loan, implemented by the government for first-time buyers in February, will be extended to all Mongolian citizens. He also said that future buildings will be geared toward heat-loss parameters and energy efficiency, while further noting that planned future construction will have higher standards and better health and safety measures.

However, in the same month, the central bank officially stopped accepting applications for the loans, part of the government?s ?100,000 Homes Project?, stating that it needed to acquire the necessary financing to resume the loans from the Trade and Development Bank of Mongolia.

While Mongolia?s rapid growth story indeed raises the spectre of it repeating mistakes made by other resource-wealthy countries in the past, it has the opportunity to learn from their experiences.
