Asia stocks rise on growth hopes, BOJ pick

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? Asian stock markets rose Thursday as positive economic indicators and the nomination of a pro-stimulus Bank of Japan chief bolstered hopes for faster growth.

Tokyo's benchmark led gains in regional stocks after the government of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe nominated Haruhiko Kuroda, currently president of the Asian Development Bank, to head Japan's central bank. The Nikkei 225 stock average was up 1.9 percent to 11,462.63 as the yen weakened.

Kuroda is seen as a supporter of Abe's efforts to overcome Japan's 20 years of economic stagnation with bolder monetary easing, a weaker yen and bigger government spending.

Elsewhere in Asia, South Korea's Kospi was up 0.9 percent at 2,021.73 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 1.2 percent to 22,848.18. Australia's S&P/ASX 200 gained 0.8 percent to 5,077.70. Stocks in mainland China, Singapore and Thailand also rose.

Investors also welcomed a string of improved economic figures from Asia, Europe and the United States.

Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry said industrial production rose 1 percent from the month before in January, the second straight monthly increase. The ministry suggested a slump in output had bottomed.

On Wednesday, new figures from the U.S. National Association of Realtors showed pending sales rose 4.5 percent in January, the biggest increase since April 2010.

And in Europe, a survey showed economic sentiment in the 17 euro countries rising by more than anticipated in February.

On Thursday, the Dow Jones industrial average closed up 175.24 points, or 1.2 percent, to 14,075.37. The Standard and Poor's 500 index gained 19.05 points, or 1.3 percent, to 1,515.99. The Nasdaq composite rose 32.61 points, or 1.3 percent, to 3,162.26.

In currency markets, the euro was almost flat at $1.3145. The dollar rose 0.1 percent to 92.35 yen.

Benchmark crude for April delivery was up 37 cents to $93.12 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

NFL.com has published detailed profiles of almost all of the players who attended this year?s Scouting Combine, and all of those profiles include a section titled ?NFL comparison,? which names the current NFL player who is the most similar to that particular draft prospect. There?s nothing unusual about that.

But here?s what is a little odd: For all four of the white wide receivers that NFL.com profiled, the ?NFL comparison? is another white wide receiver.

I noticed that after I wrote about Texas A&M wide receiver Ryan Swope saying that people are surprised that he?s a white guy who can run a 4.3-second 40-yard dash. When I wrote that, I mentioned that NFL.com seemed to be falling into the usual stereotypes about white receivers, describing Swope as a hard worker with good hands who lacks straight-line speed, while saying the NFL player most similar to Swope is another white guy, Jordan Shipley.

After I wrote about Swope, I got a call from NFL.com Senior Editor Andy Fenelon. He was not happy. Fenelon lectured me about how unfair I was, demanded that I explain myself to him, and informed me that he stands by what NFL.com published.

I didn?t much care for Fenelon?s approach (he apparently never heard the old saw about attracting more flies with honey than vinegar), but I decided to take a closer look at the wide receiver evaluations at NFL.com and see whether I had unfairly represented the way the league?s official site evaluates white wide receivers.

And after taking that closer look, I don?t think I was unfair at all. White receivers are, in fact, exclusively compared to other white receivers. (Read the profiles of Swope and the other white wide receivers, Brandon Kaufman, T.J. Moe and Conner Vernon and see for yourself.) White receivers are praised by NFL.com for their good hands and their toughness, but downgraded for their speed. All four profiles demonstrate the stereotypes we?ve all heard about white receivers a million times.

I mention this not because I think anyone involved in compiling the NFL.com profiles is racist (I don?t) but because I think it?s important for all of us to challenge the stereotypes that we all encounter every day. At NFL.com, the stereotypes about white wide receivers are prevalent. Whether NFL.com wants to admit that or not.

Mastermind behind Great Train Robbery dies at 81

LONDON (Reuters) - The mastermind behind Britain's "Great Train Robbery", a 1963 heist that turned its perpetrators into celebrities, has died aged 81, local media reported on Thursday.

Bruce Reynolds died in his sleep at his home in London after a period of ill health, reports from news media which included the BBC said, citing comments from Reynolds's son, Nick.

His death comes just months before the 50th anniversary of the "Great Train Robbery", that was at the time Britain's largest robbery.

In August 1963, Reynolds, along with an 11-member gang, tampered with railway track signals and stopped a Royal Mail night train travelling from Glasgow to London carrying letters parcels and large amounts of cash.

Reynolds and his men stormed the train and made off with 2.6 million pounds, equivalent to about 40 million pounds in today's money.

Train driver Jack Mills was struck over the head during the robbery. He died seven years later and many people believed the injuries he sustained during the heist contributed to his death.

Most of the gang were caught and given prison sentences totalling more than 300 years but Reynolds evaded capture, fleeing Britain with his wife and son. He spent five years as a fugitive in places as far afield as Canada and Mexico.

On his return to Britain Reynolds was caught by police and sentenced 25 years in prison for the train heist, of which he served just 10.

Reynolds later found fame as an author after penning his memoirs titled "Autobiography of a Thief" and became a consultant on a crime film.

His accomplice Ronnie Biggs achieved similar notoriety after he escaped from the prison where he was serving a 30-year jail sentence for his part in the robbery.

Biggs spent 36 years on the run, leading a playboy lifestyle in South America, before finally surrendering to British police in 2001. Biggs was freed in 2009 on health grounds.

Iran steps up arrests, torture, executions: U.N.

GENEVA (Reuters) - Iran has stepped up executions of prisoners including juveniles as well as arrests of dissidents who are often tortured in jail, sometimes to death, the United Nations reported on Thursday.

In twin reports issued in Geneva, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and the U.N. special investigator on human rights in Iran, Ahmed Shaheed, voiced concern at what they called an apparent rise in the frequency and gravity of abuses in Iran.

"The Secretary-General remains deeply troubled by reports of increasing numbers of executions, including of juvenile offenders and in public; continuing amputations and flogging; arbitrary arrest and detention; unfair trials, torture and ill-treatment; and severe restrictions targeting media professionals, human rights defenders, lawyers and opposition activities, as well as religious minorities," Ban reported.

The Islamic Republic, which is under economic sanctions for its disputed nuclear program, has failed to investigate "widespread, systemic and systematic violations of human rights", Shaheed's report said.

He called for the "immediate and unconditional release" of detained human rights advocates, journalists and lawyers.

Shaheed said opposition leaders Mehdi Karoubi and Mir Hossein Mousavi, who are under house arrest, are among hundreds of political prisoners held for exercising their right to freedom of expression during protests over alleged fraud in the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in 2009.

The next presidential election is set for June.

Dozens of journalists, bloggers and activists have been arrested in the past few months, Shaheed said. Lawyers defending such figures had been targeted, including Abdolfatah Soltani who was arrested in 2011 and is now serving a 13-year sentence.

In a case that stirred international outrage, blogger Sattar Beheshti was arrested last October after receiving death threats and died some days later in prison.

Iranian authorities have arrested seven people suspected of involvement in his death and a judiciary official said a forensic examination had found bruises on the blogger's body.

Shaheed said: "An informed source communicated that Mr. Beheshti was tortured for the purpose of retrieving his Facebook user name and password, that he was repeatedly threatened with death during his interrogation and that he was beaten in the face and torso with a baton."

Torture by blunt instruments, including truncheons, and rapes and electric shocks have been reported in Iran, he added.

JUVENILE EXECUTIONS

Iranian authorities should stop imposing the death penalty on juveniles, banned under international law, both reports said.

Shaheed voiced alarm at the escalating rate of executions in Iran and the use of capital punishment for offences that do not meet international standards for the most serious crimes.

"This includes alcohol consumption, adultery and drug-trafficking," he said.

Without referring to the two reports, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammad Mahdi Akhondzadeh told the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva on Thursday: "Iran's commitment to the protection and promotion of human rights remains steadfast ... There are ample evidences which indicate my country's commitment in civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights."

Shaheed, a former foreign minister of the Maldives, has not been allowed to visit Iran. His latest report is based on 169 interviews with people inside and outside the Islamic Republic.

Some 297 executions were announced by the Tehran government last year, but the true number was closer to 500, he said.

Drug-related crimes account for 80 percent of executions and smugglers are denied the right to appeal against the death penalty, Ban said.

"There has been a dramatic spike in public executions in Iran," he said. Most took place at dawn in front of crowds.

Egypt's main opposition coalition to boycott vote

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's main opposition coalition said Tuesday it will boycott upcoming parliamentary elections, a decision likely to deepen the nation's political crisis and worsen an already troubled economy.

The announcement by the liberal, secular National Salvation Front was made in a televised news conference just hours ahead of the start of a "national dialogue" called for by President Mohammed Morsi to produce recommendations to ensure the "transparency" and "integrity" of the vote.

Leading NSF member Sameh Ashour, who also heads Egypt's lawyers' union, announced the decision and said the NSF was also boycotting Tuesday's dialogue.

"We tell Morsi, dialogue with yourself. Dialogue with your party," he said. "The Egyptian people will not accept a dialogue that is imposed."

"God willing, the elections will reflect the spirit of Egyptians," Morsi said in opening remarks at the start of the dialogue, held at the presidential palace in a Cairo suburb. Most of those in attendance were Islamist politicians, with representatives of pro-democracy youth groups and rights activists staying away.

One of the NSF's most prominent leaders, Nobel Peace Laureate Mohamed ElBaradei, already called for a boycott on Saturday, but Tuesday's decision reflected the view of all of the group's political parties.

The United States reacted swiftly to the boycott decision, calling on the front reverse its position.

State Department Spokesman Edgar Vasquez said the U.S. is encouraging all Egyptian parties and potential candidates to compete, saying the election offers Egyptians an opportunity to have their voices heard.

It is "critical" for Egyptian parties to take part so that Egyptians can select representatives from a broad range of political positions, said Vasquez.

Called by Morsi last weekend, the elections will start in April and be staggered over a two-month period. Egypt's last legislature was elected in late 2011 and early 2012 but was dissolved by a court ruling in June, leaving the then-ruling military with legislative powers. Morsi took over the powers in August, then passed them in December to the Islamist-dominated upper chamber known as the Shura Council.

The opposition has been calling on Morsi to defuse the nation's political crisis before holding elections, which it says will plunge the country deeper into chaos unless its demands are first met. It wants a "neutral" government to replace the one led by Islamist Hesham Kandil, and for steps to be taken to ensure the independence of the judiciary.

The opposition also objects to an election law that was adopted this month by the Shura Council, arguing that it favored the Islamists, particularly Morsi's Muslim Brotherhood.

Ashour said Morsi, Egypt's first freely elected president, has consistently called for dialogue with the opposition but only after he created new conditions on the ground that are favorable to the Brotherhood, a fundamentalist Islamist group that has emerged as the most powerful political force in Egypt since the 2011 ouster of autocrat Hosni Mubarak.

The opposition has sharply criticized Morsi for allowing an Islamist-dominated panel to rush the drafting of a new constitution and put it to referendum before reaching a national consensus on its contents as he promised during his election campaign. It maintains that Morsi has used the same tactic regarding the elections, calling for the vote before tensions are defused.

Egypt's latest political crisis is the worst since Mubarak's ouster. It began Jan. 25 when hundreds of thousands marked the second anniversary of the start of the 18-day uprising that toppled Mubarak. Around 70 have died in clashes since, and hundreds have been wounded.

Citrus shrimp linguine

Big, juicy shrimp made bright with a citrus sauce over a bowl of comforting pasta is just the thing to stay warm in the winter while hoping for the first signs of spring.

Linguine serves as the perfect nest for big, juicy shrimp glazed with a citrus cream sauce.

The Runaway Spoon

It?s winter. Generally, it?s cold and gray, though here in Memphis, the months are punctuated with weirdly frustrating days of 70 degree F. weather. I love winter food, but I have souped and stewed and braised myself silly and I?m ready for something lighter and fresher. This recipe started as just that. A quick whip-up with the last citrus at the bottom of the fruit bowl and some shrimp from the freezer.? But this good enough to share, and could not be a quicker family meal or company dish.

Big juicy shrimp remind me of summer, and citrus is sometimes the one spot of sunshine in the winter foodscape. Add a little garlic and fresh, leafy parsley and this is a bright, sunny dish. A touch of cream adds some body, but mostly this sauce just glazes the pasta and shrimp with zest. Use a high-quality olive oil to make sure the citrus really shines.

Citrus Shrimp Linguine

Serves 4

12 ounces linguine

1 orange

1 lemon

1 lime

3 garlic cloves

1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

1/4 cup heavy cream

Small handful flat leaf parsley leaves, plus more for sprinkling

1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined

Salt and pepper, to taste

Cook the linguine in a pot of well-salted water according to the package instructions. Drain the pasta, reserving a little of the cooking water.

Grate the zest of the orange, lemon, and lime into the carafe of a blender. Juice the citrus to produce 3/4 cup juice combined. Add the juice to the blender with the garlic, parsley, olive oil, cream, 1 teaspoon salt, and a few grinds of black pepper. Blend until smooth.

Pour the sauce into a large skillet or pot that will hold the pasta. Bring to a boil and cook for about 5 minutes until the sauce is slightly thickened. Add the shrimp and cook, turning once, until cooked through. They will be pink, firm, and curled tightly. Immediately add the pasta to the pot and a couple of tablespoons of cooking water. Use tongs to toss everything together, coating all the pasta with the sauce.

Serve immediately sprinkled with a little chopped fresh parsley.

United Nations in South Africa ? News Archive ? Secretary ...

26 February 2013 | News

Geneva - I thank the International Commission against the Death Penalty for organizing this discussion, and I commend the critical role of civil society in mobilizing global support on this important issue. The right to life is the most fundamental of all human rights. It lies at the heart of international human rights law. The taking of life is too absolute, too irreversible, for one human being to inflict on another, even when backed by legal process. That is why the United Nations system has long advocated the abolition of the death penalty. International and hybrid tribunals supported by the UN do not provide for capital punishment, nor does the International Criminal Court.

Since the General Assembly first voted on a moratorium in 2007, the trend against capital punishment has gained momentum. In December 2012, the Assembly?s support for a moratorium was 111 in favour to 41 against, with 34 abstentions. The resolution calls on States to progressively restrict the use of capital punishment and not to impose it for offences committed by persons below 18 years of age and pregnant women. States were also asked to reduce the number of offences subject to the death penalty.

The sentiment towards abolition finds echoes in every region and across legal systems, traditions, customs and religious backgrounds. Currently some 150 States have either abolished the death penalty or do not practice it. I am therefore concerned that some countries with a longstanding de facto moratorium have recently resumed imposing the death penalty, and have even carried out executions. Even well-functioning legal systems sentence and execute persons who have been ultimately proven innocent. Wrongful convictions and miscarriages of justice have condemned innocent people to years of anguish on death row before being executed or exonerated.

In those States that continue to impose the death penalty, thousands of individuals are executed each year ? often in violation of international standards, such as the right to fair trial and due process. The death penalty is still used for a wide range of crimes, such as drug crimes, which do not meet the threshold of ?most serious crimes?, and information concerning the application of the death penalty is often cloaked in secrecy.

Capital punishment is inconsistent with the mission of the United Nations to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights and the dignity and worth of the human person. A global moratorium is a crucial stepping stone towards full worldwide abolition. I urge you to use this meeting to consider how to further this end.

I wish you a productive discussion.

AT&T snags OnStar wireless contract from Verizon

(AP) ? AT&T Inc. is scoring a win over rival Verizon Wireless as it takes over the contract to supply wireless connections to cars with General Motors' OnStar service.

Verizon Wireless and its predecessor companies have supplied the network for OnStar since the service launched in the 1990s, but AT&T will take over with the 2015 model year, AT&T and GM said Monday.

The news comes as cellphone companies are jostling to connect non-phone devices to their networks. Now that nearly everyone has a phone, the phone companies have to look elsewhere for growth. Dallas-based AT&T has been particularly aggressive in this area, garnering, for instance, the contract to connect Amazon Kindle e-readers.

AT&T will connect OnStar cars to its new "4G LTE" network, which can supply much higher data speeds than current OnStar connections. That means GM could deliver car software updates wirelessly, instead of making owners take their cars to the shop. It could also enable video streaming for passengers, in-vehicle Wi-Fi "hotspots" and give GM a better view of what's going on inside a car, and whether it needs maintenance. Owners might even be able to call up views from their car's cameras, remotely.

"They're basically smartphones on wheels," said Glenn Lurie, head of AT&T's "emerging devices" division.

Verizon has an LTE network that delivers speeds similar to AT&T's, with wider coverage. Lurie said that by the time AT&T takes over the contract, its LTE network will cover 300 million Americans, or 96 percent of the population. It also has older, slower networks as a backup.

Verizon Wireless said it was looking forward to continuing to provide service to current OnStar customers.

AT&T and GM made the announcement just before the opening of Mobile World Congress, the world's largest wireless trade show, in Barcelona. The companies didn't reveal financial terms. The 6 million current OnStar users pay $19 per month or $199 per year, plus per-minute calling fees. Turn-by-turn GPS navigation costs extra, too.

British automotive research firm SBD believes that 100 million cars worldwide will have built-in wireless capabilities by 2015.

Zynga Closes Baltimore Office, Consolidates in Texas, New York

zynga logoZynga is cutting costs further by closing its Baltimore studio and consolidating its presence in New York City and Texas. The moves follow a series of cost-cutting efforts that saw the closure of the Boston and Tokyo offices along with layoffs for about 5 percent of the company’s workforce. Those moves allowed the company to save $25 million last quarter. In today’s changes, Zynga is consolidating the McKinney, Texas office, which came out of the very successful Newtoy acquisition back in 2010. The company is?moving the 30 or so employees there to Dallas, which is an hour away. The studio’s leaders and Newtoy’s founders Paul and David Bettner left in the last year as their “With Friends” line of games had a strong run under Zynga. Zynga is also closing the Baltimore studio, which was behind CityVille 2. Zynga recently shut that game down after it didn’t live up to expectations as a follow-up to the original CityVille. The company is also closing down one of its Austin offices and moving those employees to North Austin. Zynga’s New York City offices will also get moved to the company’s mobile studio in the city. The company says that fewer than 1 percent of the company’s employees will be affected. Zynga chief operations officer David Ko said in a statement: ?In an effort to leverage resources as we focus on creating franchises and driving profitability, Zynga has made changes to four of our US offices. We are closing the McKinney, Texas and downtown Austin offices and relocating those teams near-by to our existing Dallas and North Austin offices. And, we will be consolidating our NYC offices to move staff to our NYC mobile studio. Also, as a part of today?s changes, the Baltimore studio will be closed. While these decisions are always difficult, these steps will affect approximately 1% of our workforce and enable us to focus our resources on the most significant growth opportunities.?

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? The family lawyer of Oscar Pistorius says the brother of the Olympic paraplegic athlete is facing culpable homicide charge in a 2010 road death.

Laywer Kenny Oldwage would not confirm details of the case Carl Pistorius is facing, but Sunday's development is compounding the problems for the family after Oscar was charged with premeditated murder in the Feb. 14 shooting death of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.

Local media reported that Carl Pistorius was allegedly involved in a crash with a woman motorcyclist and that he was to face trial last Thursday, as his brother Oscar was facing a bail hearing.

Oscar Pistorius was released on bail Friday and his brother Carl was seen driving into the affluent villa of their uncle Arnold early Sunday, where Oscar is staying while on bail.

repair-iphoneYes, you can fix that smashed iPhone on demand now. That means no visits to the Apple store, or intensive DIY efforts. A YC alum called iCracked launched a real-time, iPhone or iPad repair service a little over a month ago. Think of it like an “Exec” or an “Uber” for your broken iPhone that you can order straight to your door. With hardly any publicity at all, the service is blowing up: it boosted iCracked’s number of monthly customers by about 250 percent and the company tells me the business is eyeing “eight figures” in revenue for this year. The changes add iCracked to a growing class of startups like Exec, Uber, Zimride’s Lyft, Instacart and Postmates that are all trying to solve the logistical issues of delivering products and services in real-time in urban cities. “We want to be the ‘AAA’ for your device,” explains AJ Forsythe, the company’s CEO. “We’re doing on-demand repair and buyback for just about every major city in the U.S.” He shared some of the maps above and below with us, showing actual completed repairs in the last 30 days. Above is the San Francisco Bay Area, and just for good measure to show that this isn’t a Silicon Valley-only phenomenon, he showed us a map of South Florida (below). “We’re trying to get to a place where we can get someone to them in the shortest amount of time at the click of a button,” he said. He partnered with a 20-year-old from the U.K. named Martin Amps, who had built a dispatch system just months ago. Amps never implemented it because it was so specialized, but Forsythe found him on a Hacker News posting and thought the system could be of use to iCracked. Up until then, iCracked’s three-prong business model worked similarly. But it didn’t operate in real-time. Customers would have to mail-in their devices or schedule appointments with iTechs. iCracked earns revenue in three ways: it does 1) repairs, 2) buybacks and 3) sells do-it-yourself kits (pictured right) for people who want to fix phones themselves. The company has more than 350 “iTechnicians,” who work as contractors and are trained to quickly fix broken iPhones and iPads. They earn decent salaries of between $70,000 and $100,000 a year. Forsythe says he’s selective and he only ends up hiring about 2 to 3 percent of iTech applicants. While these “iTechs”

Introduction

The development of a Windows Phone application is in practice where a professional spends more time, however, nowadays the design of the UI and the test for application submission in the Store are points that need more attention by the professional. The quality of an application is a success factor. What you will learn:

  • Testing XAP using Windows Phone Marketplace Test Kit
  • Tips for Certification
  • Official references for certification requirements
  • An overview from the certification process

Testing XAP using Windows Phone Marketplace Test Kit

After the application development, it must be subjected for testing. The functional tests must be performed to ensure that the features are presented to the user accordingly. However, it should be taken into consideration all the features and requirements that Windows Phone requires.

Suppose that the application is in a state: "OK can be submitted." Being a bit pragmatic, is it really ready to submit? Didn?t you forget something?

In order to confirm that the application is actually completed, use the "Windows Phone Marketplace Test Kit" to ensure that the minimum requirements are achieved. Often is the first filter in the detection of common problems / errors that usually occurs. This kit is included in the SDK, therefore is not necessary additional installation.

In Visual Studio 2012, on the top menu, in "Project" menu, can be found the "Open Store Test Kit" option

“Open Store Test Kit…” from the Project Menu of Visual Studio 2012.

Alternatively, if you select the Windows Phone project (no matter if is a Windows Phone OS 7.1 or Windows Phone OS 8 project), click the right button of the mouse and then you will find the "Open Store Test Kit ..." option. “Open Store Test Kit…” from the context menu of Visual Studio 2012.

When opening Test Kit, you will realized the following:

Windows Phone Marketplace Test Kit

Application Details, show the XAP's path that will be analyzed:

XAP's path

Important, the XAP file should be in Release mode, since only the applications in Release mode can be submitted.

Qucik shortcut for the compile mode

You have to insert the image that will be displayed in the store as the pictures of the application instance, consider the example of Girl Geek Dinners application:

Configuration for Girl Geek Dinners aplication

The images will be uploaded later in the submission process of the application.

Notice that we put the sample pictures for the various resolutions, as you can see in the following image:

Option for choose the Device Type

Notes:

1. One recommendation that usually is done, is to create a folder with the name ArtWork, with all the images needed for the application.

Folder with all images that project needs
Please note that the Images folder and Assets must then be included in the project application, as you can see in the following pictures:
Folder with the contents of the project
The project will have the following aspect:
Structure of the project.

2. In ?Manifest? file is necessary to define some images that will be included in the XAP. The file is in the folder "Properties" under the name "WMAppManifest.xaml."

“Manifest” file in project

When you open this file, we will have an interface that allows us to set each image, we see the next picture which is the practical case of Girl Geek Dinners application.

Manual Tests contains a list of tests that can be done and each one has the steps required to perform the test.

Manual Test

This list focuses on the requirements of the certification process, for this reason should not be ignored!

In conclusion, Windows Phone Marketplace Test Kit has three distinct tests that represent:

  • Aplication Details: show the absolute path to the XAP file that is used for analyze and fields to insert the image that will be displayed in the store and the screenshots from the aplication.
  • Automated Tests: Automatically checks possible errors.
  • Manual Testes: A list of manual tests that can be checked.

And validate:

  • Requirements for certification of the various images (screenshots, the application icons and background image);
  • Capabilities
  • Usage for Back button;
  • Inappropriate use of the API;
  • Memory usage and performance;
  • Unexpected errors;
  • The ?Manifest? file

Windows Phone Store Test Kit is a tool from Microsoft, the official article is: MSDN - Windows Phone Store Test Kit .

Tips for Certification

  • The maximum size of the XAP package file is 225 MB;
  • The <Title> element in the WMAppManifest.xml file must contain the application title. The <Title> element must not be empty. An application must include the application name, version information, and technical support contact information that are easily discoverable. Normally is created the About Page for show that information
  • Images mandatory, have specific names and sizes to take in consideration;
  • The app list icons and ?pin-to-start? icon should not be default/generalized Windows Phone icons: they should be your personalized icons. The app icons must accomplish with the mandatory dimensions.
  • The app?s screenshots that you submit should not include any part of the emulator ? only the app content should be seen clearly. The screenshots must have the required dimensions and should be in non-transparent PNG format. Also note that graphically enhanced screenshots are not accepted.
  • The application must not invoke native code via PInvoke or COM interoperability;
  • XAP file must be in Release mode and cannot contain debugging symbols or output;
  • If the if UltimateResourceFallbackLocation.Satellite is missing the applications certification fails, for solve it, add in AssemblyInfo.cs the following:
[assembly: NeutralResourcesLanguage("pt-PT", UltimateResourceFallbackLocation.Satellite)]

Note: In this case, is used "pt-PT" but is only an example.

  • Application that supports devices with 256mb of memory, will be tested. If the application do not meet the requirements, it will fail in certification process.
  • Go to settings and change the theme from Dark to Light or Light to Dark. Application content, such as text and visual elements, must be visible and legible regardless of the phone theme.

Oily fish could prevent breast cancer - study

SCIENTISTS say they have found the first ?unequivocal evidence? that eating oily fish could help reduce the risk of breast cancer.

? Tests on mice points to benefit of omega-3

The researchers discovered that a life-long diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids, found in foods such as oily fish like salmon and vegetable oils, could cut the growth of tumours by 30 per cent.

While studies have shown that omega-3 can help reduce the risk of heart disease, there has been conflicting evidence linking it to beneficial effects in cancer.

But the latest research, published in the Journal of Nutritional Biochemistry, produced what scientists said was believed to be the first ?unequivocal evidence that omega-3s reduce cancer risk?.

Health campaigners said more research was needed to investigate how diet affects cancer risks.

For the latest study, the team from the University of Guelph in Ontario created ?transgenic mice? - genetically altered to naturally produce omega-3 fatty acids in their bodies and also to develop aggressive mammary tumours.

These mice were then compared to mice who were only genetically engineered to develop tumours.

The researchers found that the mice who produced omega-3 developed only two-thirds as many tumours as the other mice.

The tumours suffered by these mice were also 30 per cent smaller compared to the mice without omega-3 in their systems.

Professor David Ma, from the university?s Department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences, said: ?The difference can be solely attributed to the presence of omega-3s in the transgenic mice - that?s significant.

?The fact that a food nutrient can have a significant effect on tumour development and growth is remarkable and has considerable implications in breast cancer prevention.?

Breast cancer affects around 4,500 women in Scotland every year, with 1,000 deaths annually.

An increased risk of developing the disease has been linked to genetics and hormones in the body, as well as lifestyle factors such as alcohol, smoking and diet.

Diet

Prof Ma said their own findings on the potential impact of diet on breast cancer were significant.

?We show that lifelong exposure to omega-3s has a beneficial role in disease prevention ? in this case, breast cancer prevention,? he said.

?What?s important is that we have proven that omega-3s are the driving force and not something else.?

Many experts have long believed that diet may significantly help in preventing cancer.

But Prof Ma said that epidemiological and experimental studies to back up these claims had been lacking, and human studies were inconsistent.

?There are inherent challenges in conducting and measuring diet in such studies, and it has hindered our ability to firmly establish linkages between dietary nutrients and cancer risk,? he said.

?So we?ve used modern genetic tools to address a classic nutritional question.?

Prof Ma said he hoped that the study would lead to more research on using diet to reduce the risks of cancer.

?Prevention is an area of growing importance,? he said.

?We are working to build a better planet, and that includes better lifestyle and diet.

?The long-term consequences of reducing disease incidence can have a tremendous effect on the health-care system.?

James Jopling, director for Scotland at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: ?It is difficult to pin-point which dietary factors are important when it comes to breast cancer as we all eat a variety of different foods and our diet changes over time.

?It?s important to remember this experiment was done on mice and not humans.

?Much more work is needed before we?ll know how exactly diet influences breast cancer risk.

?What we do know is that nearly 4,500 women are diagnosed with breast cancer in Scotland each year. We also know that women can reduce their risk of developing this disease by limiting their alcohol consumption, getting physically active and maintaining a healthy weight.?

Adele, 'Les Miserables' cast sing on Oscar stage

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? It was an extra starry, musical day at the Dolby Theatre.

Adele took the stage first Friday, followed by the cast of "Les Miserables," singing together of the first time.

Oscar nominees Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, along with co-stars Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, Helena Bonham-Carter, Sasha Baron-Cohen, Eddie Redmayne, Aaron Tveit and Samantha Barks rehearsed their performances on the Oscar stage. They were backed by members of the musical's stage productions from London and Broadway.

"Les Miserables" director Tom Hooper sat in the front row of the theater as his cast sang together on stage.

Moments earlier, Adele dazzled the tiny audience of show workers with her performance of the James Bond theme "Skyfall."

She giddily remarked, "We're seated in the front row!"

nyk ad posCrystal Cruises Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of NYK Line,? currently has two large, luxury-class cruise ships, Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity. These ships are highly regarded around the world, and the company has won the prestigious Travel & Leisure magazine?s World?s Best Large-Ship Cruise Line award for 16 consecutive years, an unprecedented achievement in the industry.? Cruising The Past awards the Crystal Cruises one of the best and most reliable cruises lines operating. Carrying on the great tradition of the NYK Line.

A brief history of NYK Line??

Michael L. Grace is an authority on the history of NYK Line and trans-Pacific passenger services.

Cruise Ship History: JAPAN?S Trans-Pacific Liners ? Were the fastest between the US and Japan prior to World War II.

In 1935, at the invitation of Waseda University, the Yale University Baseball Team came to Japan from New Haven, Connecticut on NYK?s Tatsuta Maru , and returned aboard Asama Maru.? The team is seen with the captain and a ship?s officer.? Six years Japan and the USA would be at war.

Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), which literally translates to the Japan Mail Steamship Company, was first created in 1885, the result of a sensible merger between two Japanese shipping companies, Yubin Kisen Mitsubishi Kaisha (The Mitsubishi Mail Steamship Company) and Kyodo Unyu Kaisha (The Union Transport Company). Two red stripes were adopted for the new company?s house flag, symbolizing the mutual goodwill of both companies and the hope that their combined fleets would one day serve the entire world.

In due course, NYK Line became Japan?s national shipping company. Their subsequent passenger ships were given government-authorized mail-carrying status and therefore the highest priorities. The affixation was similar to the designation R.M.S. (for Royal Mail Ship) used by the most prominent British liners.

Historically, NYK Line opened the first regular Japan to the USA service in 1896 (the first arrival was met at Seattle with a 21-gun salute). They grew quickly. In 1901, just sixteen years after their formation, they already ranked as the seventh-largest shipping company in the world. A decade later, in 1911, an NYK freighter delivered the first cargo of trans-Pacific cherry tree saplings, a gift from the City of Tokyo to Washington, D.C. These same cherry trees line the banks of the Potomac to this day.

(Left: First and Second Class Accommodations aboard NYK Liners.)

One of Japan?s proudest periods in passenger shipping was the 1929 building of two of the finest and most luxurious ships ever to sail the Pacific Ocean ? the Asama Maru and Tatsuta Maru.? They were Japanese-designed and built, coming from the renowned Mitsubishi shipyard. At some 17,000 tons, they were then-traditional class-divided ships, and had provision for cargo as well as the all-important mails.

They were routed on NYK Line?s premier express service, regularly sailing from Hong Kong, Shanghai, Kobe and Yokohama to Honolulu, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Their passenger areas were of the highest quality, much of it in traditional European style. There were polished woods, stained glass skylights, fine dining rooms, lounges, library, gift shop, hair salon, comfortable cabins and a swimming pool on deck. This was luxury cruising at its finest.

The Asama Maru was the first to enter service in 1929 and she soon set the record for the fastest crossing of the Pacific on the Yokohama to San Francisco route. Her sister, the Tatsutu Maru entered service in 1930. In 1936 the Tatsutu Maru become the first merchant ship to pass under the new Bay Bridge linking San Francisco and Oakland.

They were routed on NYK?s premier express service, regularly sailing between Hong Kong, Shanghai, Kobe, Yokohama, Honolulu, Los Angeles and San Francisco. Yokohama to San Francisco, for example, took 15 days. Fares by the late 1930s started from $190 in second class and from $315 in first class. Their passenger areas were of the highest quality, much of it in traditional European style. There were highly polished woods, stained glass skylights, fine dining rooms, lounges, a library, a gift shop, hair salon, comfortable cabins, and a swimming pool on deck. This was luxury cruising at its finest.

Their First Class accommodations were especially fine and attracted such notable passengers as Albert Einstein, Charlie Chaplin and his wife Paulette Goddard, Helen Keller and Efrem Zimbalist.

The Asama Maru was the first to enter service in 1929. She soon set record for fastest crossing of Pacific on Yokohama-San Francisco route.? The Tatsuta Maru entered service in 1930. One of the notable moments in her career was in 1936 when she became the first merchant ship to pass under the bridge (length of the main structure, 6.8 km; width, 19.8 m), linking San Francisco and Oakland.

Ceremonies of the opening were held at 11:10 a.m. on the 12th November 1936, on the Oakland side, and at 11:40 a.m. on the San Francisco side. Shortly after noon the Tatsuta Maru passed under the bridge in view of the many thousands of people who had gathered to witness the opening of the bridge for traffic from vantage points on the San Francisco side of the bay. Until the completion of the Seto-Ohashi in Shikoku, Japan, the Bay Bridge between San Francisco and Oakland had been the longest in the world.

In 1937 the Asama Maru suffered a mishap when she was driven aground in Kowloon Bay during the Great Hong Kong Typhoon.

After the outbreak of the Second World War both ships were requisitioned as troopships but unfortunately both were sunk and did not survive the war and it was left to the Hikawa Maru to re-establish the trans-pacific service.

ASUS MeMo Pad Smart 10 flaunted in YouTube trailer

ASUS has gotten into the habit of quietly releasing info about its new MeMo Pads, and to continue that trend, has snuck a trailer for the 10-inch model onto YouTube. The vid talks up various aspects of the MeMo Pad Smart 10, including its 1.2GHz quad-core Tegra 3 processor, 5-megapixel rear shooter, 10-inch IPS display (1,280 x 800) with 178-degree viewing angle and SonicMaster audio tech, as well as some bundled software. Alongside "the metallic miracle," we're likely to see the tablet on the MWC floor in its pink, white and dark grey outfits. Before we get our hands on it, though, check out said trailer below to see if ASUS can sell you on hardware that lacks the frenzy-inducing Nexus branding.

Update: Just to be clear, the MeMo Pad Smart 10 is currently available in Europe and other territories, and is expected to cost around $299 when it launches Stateside.
