Songza

Last.FM. Pandora. Slacker. Spotify. These and a wide variety of other streaming music services let you explore the depths of your favorite acts and genres?typically free of charge with a premium for accessing more advanced features. Startup Songza joins these established players with a completely free, ad-supported service that focuses on themed playlists created by both Songza music experts and users. The fledging service has become one of my favorite online music services, thanks to its curated playlists and strong social features. Songza is our Editors' Choice among non-premium streaming music services.

Design and Interface
Songza sports an easy-on-the-eye black, gray, and blue interface that keeps the visual clutter to a minimum. There are a few visual ads, but I'd happily endure those as opposed to having my ears assaulted with Viagra ads between trip-hop tracks. You can sign up for a dedicated Songza account, log in with your Facebook credentials, or execute a search to find a playlist. Three additional options live in the menu bar positioned above the main content area: Music Concierge, Popular, and Browse All.

The Popular section, as the name implies, highlights the hottest playlists of the week, year, and those that are currently trending. The 20-track playlists run the gamut from the expected era-related collections (The Grunge Era) to wacky compilations (100 Worst Songs Ever). Browse All let me rifle through the 50-plus musical genres that Songza offers. I like the variety on display.

Music Concierge is easily one of the most unique features in the streaming music space as it presents music options based on the time of day. For example, Monday Afternoon features Work or Study (No Lyrics), Work or Study (With Lyrics), An Energy Boost, Easing the Tension, and Popular Genres. The Saturday Late Night options include A Sweaty Dance Party, A Nightcap, Getting High, Getting Lucky, and Bedtime. You get a choice of actual music genres after you click one of those options. From there, you can select one of three playlists that are tailored for that time of day. For example, Saturday Night includes the likes of Drop the Bass (electro and dubstep tracks), while Monday Afternoon features Safe For Work (contemporary pop-rock focusing on "female vocalists and sensitive guys").

The Songza Experience
I decided to pass the day with Feelin' Good in the '90s, a playlist of happy, up-tempo '90s songs. The tunes streamed smoothly over our office wireless connection. I could give tracks the "yay" or "nay" by clicking the thumbs up or thumbs down icons, and I could also skip songs. Unfortunately, I couldn't skip to the beginning of a track, which is a feature I've grown accustomed to doing with my Slacker Radio (Free, 4.5 stars) Premium account. Unfortunately, I couldn't listen (or even find!) individual albums, one of my favorite Slacker Radio features. Songza lacks lyrics, but it contains crisp audio that smoothly streamed over my wireless connection.

I did, however, create a playlist by clicking "Contribute A Playlist." The process is dead simple: You give the playlist a title, a description, and add at least 10 songs from six different artists. I quickly built a playlist highlighting the tracks most frequently sampled by hip hop producer (The Songs That Helped Build Hip Hop), and set it up so that others could contribute with tracks of their own. I liked the democratic curation, which gave me a more active role in what the service provides to its users. This is a feature that Spotify (Free, 4.5 stars) possesses; a feature that we'd like to see more services adopt.

Songza implements social networking features, too. I followed other users which resulted in the service updating me when the person I've followed listens to, or favorites, a song. This helped me discover new acts?for better or for worse. You can also comment on songs, and share to Facebook and Twitter. Songza displays a cluster of people who have recently listened to the playlist you're currently listening to, as well as recommending similar playlists. You can save playlists if you're logged in and click "Save Playlist."

Currently, Songza lacks a premium model, which would ideally remove ads and the six-skips-per-hour limitation.

Should You Listen to Songza?
Yes. Songza succeeds because it dares to be different and implements its features in an intuitive and fun manner. If you don't mind the ads and skip limitations, you'll find the service quite enjoyable, especially if you enjoy mixing it up with other music fans. Spotify is the Editors' Choice pick among premium streaming music services due to its collaborative playlists, the ability to import own music files, and more, but if you want an active role in music curation without paying, Songza is the Editors' Choice among free music services.

New York city schools want to ban 'loaded words' from tests ...

New York (CNN) ? Divorce. Dinosaurs, Birthdays. Religion. Halloween. Christmas. Television. These are a few of the 50-plus words and references the New York City Department of Education is hoping to ban from the city?s standardized tests.

The banned word list was made public ? and attracted considerable criticism ? when the city?s education department recently released this year?s "request for proposal" The request for proposal is sent to test publishers around the country trying to get the job of revamping math and English tests for the City of New York.

The Department of Education's says that avoiding sensitive words on tests is nothing new, and that New York City is not the only locale to do so. California avoids the use of the word "weed" on tests and Florida avoids the phrases that use "Hurricane" or "Wildfires," according to a statement by the New York City Department of Education.

In its request for proposal, the NYC Department of Education explained it wanted to avoid certain words if the "the topic is controversial among the adult population and might not be acceptable in a state-mandated testing situation; the topic has been overused in standardized tests or textbooks and is thus overly familiar and/or boring to students; the topic appears biased against (or toward) some group of people."

Mormon Light: Modern Media and Family Home Evening

Teach your children how to use modern media in righteous ways by incorporating them in Family Home Evening:

• Have everyone share their?favorite Mormon Message.
• Download hymns and Primary songs to iTunes, iPods, or iPhones. Make playlists for certain activities, such as "On our way to church" or "Wiggle songs."
• Take photos or make videos to submit to the media library on lds.org.
• Make profiles on mormon.org.
• Read an Ensign (or other Church magazine) article, General Conference talk, or the scriptures?and have everyone follow along on their laptop/tablet, phone, or iPod touch. Or have each person read or watch?a talk?of their choice and then share what they learned with the rest of the family.
• Work on Personal Progress or Duty to God online.
• Listen to the LDS radio.
• Work on scripture mastery or memorizing the Articles of Faith together.
• Play games from The Friend online.
• Have Family Home Evening with family members elsewhere via Skype.

Media Center to live in a separate version of Windows 8?

To the surprise of many, but not all, the same great Windows Media Center from Windows 7 was part of the Windows 8 Consumer Preview. What this means for the final version of Windows 8 is still far from known, however, Winunleaked offers up a new clue with the Pro Pack edition labeled as ProfessionalWMC. It's hard to know however, if this is just a different SKU for the Professional version of Windows 8 or a glimpse of something that will impact multiple version of the new operating system. Media Center started as a separate product from Windows proper and Microsoft has publicly left clues that it might return to its roots -- presumably to avoid making every Windows user pay licensing costs for codecs like Dolby Digital that are required for live TV. For the moment, it's really just more speculation while we wait for the fall to arrive with latest official offerings from Redmond.

Not today.

Last Thursday we lost our pet/friend Freya.

The following is an adaptation to the lyrics of ?Hurt? as performed by Johnny Cash. If you haven?t listened to his rendition I highly suggest you do.

This is the best way I know to ?express my pain.

I lost my?pet?friend today,
At he tender age of five,
I had to focus on her pain,
I?ll remember her alive,

A shadow of herself,
With sadness in her eyes,
Ever stoic and so brave,
Did not vocalize her cries,

Now that you are gone,
My sweetest friend,
Every?pet?friend I know,

Freya had seemed a little off for a while. ?She was lethargic and had barely eaten in a week. ?We had a vet appointment arranged for the 22nd.

She never made it.

After a trip to the ER vet in the wee hours of Thursday, a night of sitting vigil and another trip to our vet the next morning we came to realize that many, many things were going wrong with our fully grown puppy. ?She still had so much ?puppy? in her.

Freya was suffering from auto immune disease, an enlarged spleen, and worse, ?suggestive? bone marrow and stomach cancer. ?Terms like ?suggestive? are used, I think, when the vet is telling you the worst of news.

Freya?s body was failing her on all levels and we chose to put her down to stop her suffering. ?It sucked. ?The look in her eyes is burned into my head.

Freya was our first baby and not just a pet but a member of our family. The loss of Freya has hit us very hard especially as she was only 5 years old and her death was very sudden.

So please keep us in our thoughts in the next weeks and months as we figure out life without Freya?

And thanks for not getting annoyed for my writing about the ?personal?. ?Reflecting, remembering, writing ? has been?therapeutic.

Android app apathy: Why developers still aren't smitten with Android

A new survey of mobile developers conducted by Appcelerator and IDC has turned up some interesting results. No doubt spurred by the death of mobile Flash, developers are rapidly embracing HTML5 for building apps. Similarly, developers seem to be embracing Google?s social efforts more than, perhaps, everyday users might be. However, another finding jumps out: Developer interest in the Android platform seems to be slowly eroding. Apple?s iOS remains the top target of mobile developer efforts, with 89 percent of respondents indicating they?re very interested in developing for the iPhone, and a nearly equal number (88 percent) saying they?re very interested in the iPad.

Android holds a strong second-place ranking: some 78.6 percent of developers say they?re very interested in developing for Android phones, and 65.9 percent say they?re very interested in Android tablet. But here?s the thing: the Android phone figures represent a 4.7 percent quarter-to-quater decline.?Similarly, the Android tablet figures are 2.2 percent lower than from the last survey.

Fewer Android developers means fewer top-drawer applications for Android ? and could mean users will eventually begin leaving the platform for one with better software. Why are some developers turning way from Android, and what can be done to keep them on board?

Is Ice Cream Sandwich melting on the shelf?

The results of the Appcelerator survey seem to fly in the face of comments from Google chairman Eric Schmidt, who forecast that the release of Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich would spark developer interest, and perhaps make Ice Cream Sandwich some developers? preferred deployment platform by mid-2012. As the first release of Android to be optimized for use on both tablets and smartphones, ICS was supposed to overcome longstanding concerns of Android platform fragmentation and give developers a solid, sure target for their apps.

Android?s future would seem to be rosey: In late February at Mobile World Congress, Google?s Android chief Andy Rubin claimed that there were more than 300 million Android devices out in the wild, including 12 million tablets. Furthermore, Google was activating some 850,000 new Android devices every day. That would seem to be a pretty ripe plum for developers looking to get their mobile apps in front of a large audience.

However, developers seem to be taking a cautious wait-and-see approach to Ice Cream Sandwich. Google?s latest and greatest Android operating system was initially only available on a single device ? the Samsung Galaxy Nexus ? and while device makers and carriers are gradually getting ICS out to a number of recent devices, progress has been slow. A surprising number of Android devices on the market are still running Android 2.2 (Froyo) or earlier. Many will never get upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich: Some users will only upgrade when (and if) they buy a new Android device. Right now, the most widely installed version of Android seems to be version 3.0 Gingerbread, which had a slower rollout than any previous version of Android. When building an app for Android today, developers still face a serious question: Do I target Ice Cream Sandwich and hope the market catches up with my app? Or do I target Gingerbread (or perhaps even earlier versions of Android) to reach the most people?

Still, Android doesn?t have it so bad. The same survey found developer interest in Research in Motion?s BlackBerry platform has dropped from 20.7 percent last quarter to 15.5 percent this quarter. And, despite underwhelming sales to date, developer interest in Microsoft?s Windows Phone platform is holding steady at 37 percent. That basically puts Microsoft?s nascent smartphone platform in the number-three position, albeit distantly. Furthermore, an essentially equal number of developers report being very interested in making apps for Windows 8 tablets.

As intriguing as the survey results are, it?s important to note they don?t represent scientific fact. The results are based on surveying some 2,173 Appcelerator Titanium developers in late January 2012, and then following up with 484 in late February. There?s no way of telling if developers who use Appcelerator?s development framework are in any way representative of Android developers in general. Both Appcelerator and IDC note that the figures for the erosion of developer interest in Android aren?t far from the margin of error for their survey. So it could all be a hill of beans.

To market, to market, to buy a fat pig?

Android fragmentation is likely only part of some developers? concern over building Android apps. Another appears to be workable revenue models for Android applications. Simply put, making a quality Android app that generates significant revenue seems to be significantly different than making a quality app for iOS that generates significant revenue. Developers prefer to design and build one application, then bring versions to different platforms. However, the reality is that an app design and revenue model that works for iOS may not work for Android, and vice versa. While not yet common, some developers are finding themselves in a position where it makes sense to drop their Android development efforts ? a recent example is Mika Mobile. And doing business with Google?s Android Market, now Google Play for Android, can be quite a lot different than doing business with Apple: Game developer Retro Dreamer says it doesn?t build paid Android apps because the international tax situation is too complex?? an issue it doesn?t have with iOS.

Last November, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Muster raised eyebrows by opining that the overall revenue generated by Android applications was a mere seven percent of that generated by iOS apps. Many criticized Munster?s analysis as incomplete, noting the figures did not seem to account for so-called ?freemium? games that are free to download but that require payments to full activate or that make additional features or content available through in-app purchases. A key difference in the Android and iOS app revenue models is that Apple?s iTunes App Store is built on Apple?s iTunes Store, which has been accumulating accounts (and associated credit cards) for nearly a decade. Apple had (and retains) an enormous number of customers who are accustomed to paying for digital content a la carte. Google didn?t have that, and many successful Android app developers have eschewed the traditional pay-to-download model and embraced freemium and in-app purchases as a way to generate revenue. Of course, a tremendous variety of applications also derive their revenue from in-app advertising ? another revenue source that wouldn?t have been factored in to that dreary seven percent solution.

Nonetheless, the revenue disparity between Android and iOS apps seems very real. Last December, Flurry Analytics found that if an app is available for both iOS and Android, the Android version will generate on average less than one quarter of the revenue of the iOS app. Flurry attributed the discrepancy to an Android users? ability to pay: With Apple, nearly every user is a potential paying customer, where Google Checkout is used by far fewer Android users.

Free apps that rely on in-app advertising to support their development also have their downsides. A recent study from Cambridge University found that 80 percent of free applications in the Android Market were supported by in-app advertising. More than 70 percent of free apps request ?dangerous? permissions to access things like user?s messages, email, location, contacts, phone number, and unique device identifier. The price of ?free? apps in many cases seems to be a loss of privacy and disclosing personal data. As consumers become increasingly aware of online and mobile privacy issues, the free-with-ads revenue model may be inhibiting consumers adoption of Android apps.

Can Google and developers cope?

Android is not facing an imminent crisis amongst developers. But, looking out over the next two years, Android (and Google) are clearly going to have to move application development and revenue generation to the same priority level as OEM adoption and device activations, or face a stagnating software and content ecosystem. Expand in-app purchasing beyond games

Currently, most in-app purchases on mobile platforms are limited to games, and are fueled by a handful of dedicated gamers buying virtual goods and content add-ons. Google only enabled in-app billing features in March 2011: Both Google and developers need to leverage this capability to create revenue models that work beyond games. This will have to include support for subscription billing ? something Google has yet to enable ? so users can subscribe to regular content updates from magazines, newspapers, and other publishers. Putting users in charge of their personal data may put a crimp in the existing ad-supported app model, but it will mean consumers will be far more comfortable with that model going forward. Privacy safeguards could have a similar effect for so-called ?incentivized installs,? which lure users into downloading advertisers? apps in exchange for in-game or in-app content.

One reason consumers may not be embracing Android apps as strongly as iOS apps? Google?s market is (still) a mess.
